Gary Thomas Biography
Born in Baltimore in 1962. Largely self taught, he played in school bands and soon began appearing at the Baltimore / Washington club circuit. In 1986 he joined Jack DeJohnette's Special Edition and in 1987 the Miles Davis group. He was soon appreciated for his robust sound and his harmonically complex playing linking him to the tradition set up by Boston's Sam Rivers, Philadelphia's John Coltrane and Newark's Wayne Shorter. Critic Kevin Whitehead about Thomas's first album Seventh Quadrant :" The sound of the East Coast tenor is an urban shout, a citified roar. This is what Gary Thomas is about." On his second outing Code Violations Gary Thomas employed some electronics and explored the possibilities of funk oriented rhythm - a direction he has since followed even more when he got involved with rap music. Gary Thomas enjoys a fine success in the USA as well as in Europe wherre he has been featured at the major festivals. And he is a regular in Japan where his music is much appreciated.
