Born in Broken Hill, NSW Australia in 1953, Peter Waters completed his piano studies in Adelaide with Rolland May and Clemens Leske, and in London with Peter Wallfisch. Various prizes during his student years included the Chamber Music Prize and two solo Performance Prizes from the Royal College of Music, as well as the Australian Musical Association Prize. His career then took him to the European continent where he was soon to play at the Salzburg Festival with the soprano Gundula Janowitz a much celebrated performance of HindemithÕs Das Marienleben. This led to both solo and duo recitals in Paris, Vienna, Berlin, London, Lyon, Rome, Stockholm, Cologne, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich and countless music festivals. He was chosen to perform in the 1985 Bach Festival Schaffhausen for the composer's tricentennial as soloist with the Philharmonia Hungarica.
Highly acclaimed performances during numerous tours since 1992 as well as in live concerts recordings and tours in Europe, South America, Australia and Russia focus on his two principal themes: Mozart and the 20th century.
Concerto engagements in various countries have resulted in success in the same field, notably with the concerti of Aribert Reimann, Khachaturian, Schnittke and Bartók and the complete Mozart concerti.
In December 1996 he was the Musical Director and solo pianist in a series of concerts organised as an exchange project between St. Petersburg (Russia) and Switzerland entitled Mozart and Modern. Enthusiastic critical acclaim also came his way in February and March 1997 for a tour as soloist with the Orchestre de Lille, in the Piano Concerto in G from Maurice Ravel. Peter Waters is a member of Collegium Novum Zurich, a pool of soloists dedicated to contemporary music, in which he has enjoyed close working contact with various composers, including Mauricio Kagel, Arvo Pärt, Sofia Gubaidulina, Gunther Schuller, Aribert Reimann and George Crumb. His CD with music from John Adams, Ravel and Satie won the highest distinction for Australia in 1997, the ABC Best Classical Recording.
